Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious dental issue that plagues more than half of American adults. At McCall Family Dentistry, many patients see us for treatment of periodontal disease, and our hygienists provide gentle care to those suffering from it. Rest assured that whatever stage of gum disease you’re facing, our team is well equipped to help you.
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, and the good news is that if the condition is detected early on, you may be able to effectively manage your condition with a thorough professional cleaning and improved home care. We can detect gingivitis when we screen you for gum disease during your six-month examinations. If you notice that your gums appear red and swollen or they bleed when you brush your teeth, contact our office right away as these are the early indicators of gingivitis.
Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease, and it’s in this stage that damage occurs. Periodontitis will require a deeper cleaning to reach below the gum line and remove tartar and plaque build-up. Unfortunately, there is no cure for gum disease, but our hygienists and doctors can recommend additional cleanings and other therapies to help patients with periodontitis maintain their oral health.
